The Private History of a Campaign That Failed: Twain’s War Diary â€Å"We pierced the forest about half a mile and took up a strong position with some low and rocky hills behind us, and a purling limpid creek in front. Straightaway half the command was in swimming and the other half fishing,†and so Mark Twain’s short story: The Private History of a Campaign that Failed is summarized—but was Twain swimming or fishing? Published in 1896, Twain’s piece follows a band of youthful Civil War rebels through the eyes of their 24-year-old ‘leader’. Instantly one can distinguish the inadequacies of the â€Å"Marion Rangers† as Twain depicts both their cowardice and inexperienced war tactics. He spoke before the dinner recounting his actual Civil War experience. Twain said, â€Å"I was made Second Lieutenant and Chief Mogul of a company of eleven men, who knew nothing about-war - nor anything, for we had no Captain. My friend, who was 19 years old†¦and just out of the infant school, was made Orderly Sergeant. His name was Ben Tupper. He had a hard time.† Important from his statement is the confirmation that Twain actually held the exact posi tion of the narrator of his story and also the consistent youth and inexperience of the troops. The theme of inexperience is continued in his story many times over. An example of which can be seen when the narrator describes the daily activities of the men, â€Å"afternoons, we rode off here and there in squads a few miles and visited the farmer’s girls and had a youthful good time†¦Ã¢â‚¬  These are not the action of hardened killers. Rather, they are those of innocent and ignorant boys that have the misinterpretation that they are fighting a war. Dashain Festival of Nepal INTRODUCTION Dashain is the biggest festival in Nepal. Dashain is celebrated by Nepalese people with great excitement. It is normally in the month of October but sometimes in late September. It falls in the best time of the year when fruits, vegetables and other foods are in plenty. And, all animals are well fed and healthy. It is said that Dashain is a celebration of the victory of the gods over the wicked demons. More sophisticated people think it as a message that good will always wins over bad in the end. And, we all should stand on the side of the good even when the bad side may look to be stronger. THE PREPARATION Before the first day of Dashain starts, people clean their houses, clean up the barns, paint white and red colours on the walls, paint the windows, repair the Aangan, repair the barns and trails in the villages, and paint the temples, schools and shelters with white clay. They buy new clothes, lots of food and spices. Then the celebration begins. THE FIFTEEN DAYS OF DASHAIN The fifteen days are said to mark the various events in the war between the gods and the demons. These fifteen days of Dashain are celebrated as follows: * Day 1: Ghastapana:Â  It is the first day of moon and represents the start of the battle. All weapons and tools in the households are gathered, cleaned and put in a room where Goddess Durga’s worship is commenced. Seeds of corn and barley are planted in a large planter of leaves and kept in dark in the worship room. These seeds would have grown to be yellow seedlings (Jamara) by the ninth day, when they are offered to Vishwa Karma and to all worshippers on the tenth day. * Day 2-7: Dwitia to Saptami:Â  Represent the continuation of the battle. * Day 8: Ashtami:Â  Animals are sacrificed in the temples of Goddess Durga asking for her help to win the battle. * Day 9: Nawami:Â  People worship Durga in mass. Everyone goes to temple of Durga. Also Vishwa Karma (god of creativity) is worshipped at the room where all tools and weapons were kept and the tools are finally released from the room. All machinery like sewing machine, cars, carts and grinding mills are stopped and offerings are made to Vishwa Karma asking to protect from accidents and mishaps. This day signifies that everyone gets ready for the final battle. * Day 10: Vijaya Dasami:Â  Goddess Durga defeats demon Mahishasur. Good finally wins over the bad. Victory is celebrated with exchanges of blessings and best possible food one can afford. Elders in the family give blessings to the young and put Tika and Jamara on their forehead. People are supposed to pay honor to and get blessings from the all surviving elders in the family clan. All people seem to be on the move as they try to visit as many relatives as possible to collect the most possible blessings. * Day 11-14: Ekadashi – Chaturthi:Â  These days are for visiting elders that were too far to visit on the tenth day. Also if some difficulties prevented us from reaching home and elders. So Tika continues throughout Dashain. * Day 15: Purnima or Kojagrat Purnima:Â  Dashain ends on the day of full-moon. On this day, people stay at home and rest. Laxmi (the goddess of wealth) is worshiped on this date. People are now ready to work and acquire virtue, power and wealth. In Dashain, you want a tika from an older person in your family or from anyone. You want to receive blessings from as many wellwishers as you can. First you start in your family. The oldest person in your family gives Tika and blessings to the youngest then the second youngest and so on. There are many factors that can cause a change in demand but there seems to be four main factors that effect it the most. First, a change in consumers income can shift the curve. If there is an increase in consumers income, the demand curve will shift to the right. Second, a change in population can shift the curve. If the population increases, the demand curve shifts to the right. Another important factor is the preferences of the consumer. If the consumers preference for a certain good increases, this will also shift the curve to the left. The last and possibly most important factor is the prices of related goods. In regard to substitutes, if the price of a substitute increases, the demand curve for the original good will shift to the right. For example, if the price of Pepsi rises, the demand curve for Coke shifts to the right. Legalization of Drugs (for) Drugs are a major influential force in our country today. The problem has gotten so out of hand that many options are being considered to control it or even solve it. Ending the drug war seems to be a bit impossible. The war on drugs seems to be accomplishing a lot but this is not true. Different options need to be considered. Legalization is an option that hasn't gotten a chance but should be given one. Although many people feel that legalizing drugs would increase the amount of use, drugs should be legalized because it will reduce the great amounts of money spent on enforcement and it will increase our countries revenue. Legalization is considered unnecessary by many people. They feel that it will increase the amount of drug use in our country. They say that many cases of drug users who have quit, quit because of troubles with the law. Legalization would eliminate the legal force that discourages the users from using or selling drugs. They also say that by making drugs legal, the people that have never tried drugs before for fear of getting caught by the law, will have no reason to be afraid anymore and they will become users. However, making drugs legal will reduce the great amounts of money spent on enforcement every year. Drug dealers and users are one step ahead of the enforcement process. If one drug lord is caught, another one will show up somewhere else. We cannot win. In 1987, 10 billion dollars were spent alone just on enforcing drug laws. Drugs accounted for about 40 percent of all felony indictments in the New York City courts in 1989. This figure is quadruple what it was in 1985. One can only imagine what this figure would be like today. Forty percent of the people in federal prison are drug law violators. Too much money is wasted on a cause that there seems to be no end to. In 1989 a Republican county executive of Mercer County N.J. estimated that it would cost him as much as 1 billion dollars to build the jail space needed to house all the hard-core drug users in Trenton alone. All of this money could be used on better things. Legalizing drugs would also increase our economy's revenue. During Prohibition alcohol use was still ramped. People were still doing it but illegally. The 21st amendment repealed prohibition and alcohol taxes were increased. The same thing should happen with drugs. The drugs should be taxed heavily to increase our revenue. The drugs would be made by the same people who make aspirin so the quality would be assured- no poisons, no adulterants. Sterile hypodermic needles will be readily available at corner drug stores. These could be taxed heavily because the users will be assured of "clean drugs." The money collected from the taxes could be used for method owned clinics for the users. As George P. Schultz stated, "We're not really going to get anywhere until we can take the criminality out of the drug business and the incentives for criminality out of it." Legalization will be profitable to our economy in two ways. It will allow for the money spent on drug law enforcement to be spent more wisely and it will increase our revenue. As for whether or not there will be an increase in use, we can never tell unless we give legalization a chance.
